Liverpool
Airport
Liverpool Airport
became the first commercial airport in the UK to be named after a person,
rather than the place in which it is located. That person is, of course,
former Beatle John Lennon. However, names aside, Liverpool has also opened a
new passenger terminal to go with the re-naming, and with an ever increasing
range of budget flights, competition between the two ancient rivals at each
end of the Manchester Ship Canal is hotting up. Liverpool
Airport History Liverpool Airport is
one of the UK's longest serving airports. Originally known as Speke Airport,
the airport was officially opened in 1933. During the war the airport was
handed over to the Royal Air Force. By 1966 it was time for a new runway and
when it was completed it enabled 24 hour operational service. This runway is
still in use today. In
2002 the airport was renamed in the honour of one of Liverpool's favourite
sons, former Beatle John Lennon. A 7ft statue has been constructed, and John
Lennon proudly stands guard over the passengers whilst they check in Map of Liverpool

As has happened with
trade since the days of the Industrial Revolution, and as continues to
happen with football, Liverpool's main rival airport is Manchester
Airport.
Although Manchester has a much wider range of intercontinental flights,
currently very few budget airlines fly from it. Therefore, with the
range of Easyjet destinations, Liverpool will remain the airport of choice
for the cost conscious traveller. For people living in places such as
Macclesfield, Stoke or Stafford, it may be worth looking at cheap flight
offers from East
Midlands or Birmingham
International Airports.
